Upper management signs a contract on a $1/3-million piece of equipment that will require a total reorganization of workflow and physical space including substantial electrical changes without first consulting me. (operations manager)

Part The Second:

When they tell me it’s being delivered tomorrow and in order to meet EOQ contract deadlines it has to be installed and operational by Friday (the 30th)

I’ve seen my father go though something like that. It’s quite interesting.

Good luck man! i’d like to pick your brain on how you got into Operations Management. Got my degree in it but haven’t been able to put it to use yet. If you have time...

How to get into manufacturing ops management the way JawzX2 did it:

pre-1) Have “natural” mechanical aptitude and nerdyness

1) Get a BFA in digital media/photography and sculpture (double BFA major).

2) Work as a color slave in large format printing, mostly Fine Art reproduction for notoriously picky clients, who’s names you would know if I felt like saying them.

3) Prove to be good at organizing production systems and processes

4) prove to be able to fix printers and industrial equipment (as stint as a full-time auto mechanic comes in handy here)

5) get a job as a process development slave and service tech for a major printing automation supplier.

6) Apply for Ops management job at company with an opening, point to background and successes, get hired.

I have no idea whats even involved in getting an Ops management degree, is that a business degree, or an engineering degree? The right answer is “yes”, but I’m curious what Higher Education thinks it is.

It’s times like this working as an Engineer for a major chemical company when I don’t even blink at $350,000 equipment that I realize I may be a bit desensitized to just how much money companies can blow through at any given moment.

We have 17 employees. It’s a big expenditure for us.

Actually this is really good advice. I think I am doing it right then. I am a grunt in an engineering position. I guess I just have to do my time.

My degree was actually a Bachelor’s of Applied Science. I took many business classes and some (but not nearly as many) engineering courses. I work for a manufacturing company now so I think I am doing it right.

Thanks Again!

Oh no doubt, wasn’t intending to downplay it. My point was just my general amazement at the business spending that can exceed the value of my house and cars combined, with an executive not even batting an eye. It’s crazy.
